Main Street is awesome. Put a bunch of meaningful businesses together within walking distance of where you live. Google quickly turned up the National Trust Main Street Center, with their Main Street Four-Point Approach™:

I think that hits me pretty square on, doesn't it? I see some programs in Pittsburgh, but none in my suburb, Ambridge. I know there are other things going on, though. Hrm ...
